Flash 4 and later (from Macromedia's 2004 acquisition by Adobe Systems) preserved Flash's features as was from Flash 3, however with a few minor changes. Adobe's Flash Player discontinued support for programs written in FloridaSuite and Macromedia Flash MX in favor of a new programming language which is Application Program Interface/Interface Definition Language (ie. ActionScript) that uses the open platform. Flash Player 8 is no longer a Macromedia product, and will not be supported by Macromedia or Adobe after August 2008.[citation needed]
On November 9, 2005, Android Inc. announced a free, unlocked mobile software application platform based on Adobe Flash. On July 11, 2006, at MAX 2006, Adobe introduced the open source startup project that would go on to become known as Adobe Flash Platform. While the Flash Player for mobile devices (like the Adobe Flash Player for the desktop) is a proprietary product, the Flash Player available for mobile devices is open source and available for anyone to use and modify. In November 2006, a beta version of the Flash Player for Mobile was made available for download by the public under an open source licence. The first official Android OS compatible Flash video player started to emerge in July 2007. With the SDK 1.0 release of the Android Software Development Kit 1.0 on February 2, 2007, Flash support was officially added to Android mobile devices.[citation needed]
On April 21, 1998, as part of the Macromedia buyout, Macromedia announced that it was retiring Macromedia Flash 1.0, and that Macromedia Flash 2.0 would no longer have an optional plug-in, as all new content would be in separate SWF files. 7211a4ac4a
